Shop-wide net margins in this trade typically land between 10% and 20%, but that headline hides enormous variation by service. United States

Mistakes That Sink New Shops

- Selling deletes and defeat tunes. They are easy money until the EPA settlement arrives. Treating emissions-defeat work as a normal service line is a federal Clean Air Act violation, and enforced cases have run to six-figure penalties. Build the plan around legal, documented work.
- Quoting flat prices on complex builds. A flat quote on a job that overruns hands your margin to the customer. Bill technician labour at an hourly rate and track efficiency, or the high-skill work that should be most profitable becomes your biggest loss-maker.
- Buying a full fabrication shop on day one. A spray booth, dyno, plotter and alignment rack before you have proven demand is how a lean launch balloons. Open with a core shop plus one specialism bay and add capacity from revenue.
- Not documenting modifications for the customer's insurer. Undocumented work voids the owner's policy and the dispute lands on you. A simple modification record per car protects both sides and becomes a selling point.
