Market Size, Demand & Buyer Signals
A cassava farming plan should start with the buyer, not the field. Cassava roots spoil quickly once lifted, and the crop can move into several different chains: fresh roots, gari, high-quality cassava flour, chips, native starch, modified starch, sweeteners, ethanol, animal feed, and industrial binders. That flexibility is attractive, but it can also weaken a plan if the founder treats every possible product as a real revenue stream. A lender will want to know which one or two channels are signed, priced, and reachable by road during harvest months.
The strongest demand signal is processed starch. Market.us estimates the global cassava starch market at USD 5.1 billion in 2024, rising to USD 8.3 billion by 2034 at a 5.0% CAGR Market.us, 2025. Fortune Business Insights gives a higher 2025 base, valuing global cassava starch at USD 6.18 billion in 2025 and projecting USD 11.47 billion by 2034 at 7.11% CAGR Fortune Business Insights, 2026. Grand View Research places the 2025 cassava starch market at USD 6.11 billion with a USD 8.14 billion 2030 forecast and identifies Asia Pacific as 57.3% of 2023 revenue Grand View Research, 2025. Your plan does not need to reconcile every analyst model, but it should show that starch demand is real and that your farm has a defined route into it.
The second signal is production geography. Nigeria remains the largest production story. Nigeria's federal agrifood investment plan says annual cassava production has ranged between 58 million and 62 million metric tons, rose from about 45 million metric tons in 2015 to more than 63 million metric tons by 2022, and that cassava area reached nearly 9.88 million hectares by 2023 Nigeria Federal Ministry of Agriculture, 2026. That same document warns that yields remain around 5-6 metric tons per hectare in many Nigerian systems, far below Thai yield levels that can reach up to 40 metric tons per hectare under stronger production conditions Nigeria Federal Ministry of Agriculture, 2026. For a business plan, this gap is more useful than a headline market size: it tells the reader where the operational upside sits.
Thailand provides the pricing and export discipline that many founder plans miss. Krungsri Research reports that in 2024, 68.1% of Thai cassava output supplied export markets and Thailand held about 25% of global cassava product export volume Krungsri Research, 2025. It also reports that Thai native starch exports reached 3.2 million tonnes and USD 1.6 billion in 2024, while first-five-month 2025 export prices fell 28.1% year on year to an average USD 397 per tonne Krungsri Research, 2025. A cassava farm selling into processors cannot assume a flat price curve. It needs a conservative base case, a drought or disease case, and a low-price case where old stock, Chinese demand shifts, or corn substitution pressure the buyer's price.
Starch pricing also varies heavily by destination. IMARC's price tracker lists Q4 2025 cassava starch prices at USD 946 per metric ton in the USA, USD 523 per metric ton in China, USD 1,467 per metric ton in Germany, and USD 455 per metric ton in Thailand IMARC Group, 2026. The Thai Tapioca Starch Association's 2025 weekly export price table shows FOB Bangkok prices moving from USD 420 per metric ton on 7 January 2025 to USD 480 per metric ton on 23 December 2025 Thai Tapioca Starch Association, 2025. These are not farm-gate root prices, but they set the ceiling for what processors can pay after conversion losses, energy, labour, finance, packaging, and export margin.
Food buyers
Fresh roots, gari, fufu flour, HQCF, gluten-free flour, tapioca pearls, and bakery ingredients. These buyers care about variety, cyanide-safe processing, moisture, cleanliness, and delivery reliability.
Industrial buyers
Starch, paper, textile, adhesives, pharmaceuticals, and packaging buyers. These channels need consistency, scale, traceability, and a processor who can meet specifications.
Feed and ethanol
Chips, peels, fibre, and low-grade roots can support feed or ethanol economics, but prices are often more sensitive to corn, imported grain, and energy markets.

A good cassava farming plan therefore has a narrow commercial thesis. It might say: we will grow TME-419 and improved local varieties on 18 hectares, sell 70% of roots under processor letters, convert 20% into dried chips during peak harvest, and retain 10% as planting material or contingency. Or it might say: we will operate as an aggregator with nucleus-farm control over quality and outgrower supply. The weak plan says only that cassava is a staple crop and demand is high. The fundable plan shows who buys, why they buy, what they reject, and how quickly the farm can turn harvest into cash.

Search behaviour around cassava farming is practical. Founders want to know whether the crop is profitable, how much capital is needed, how long the crop takes, what equipment is essential, and who will buy the roots. Those questions are useful because they force the plan out of theory and into cash-flow timing.
Is cassava farming profitable?
It can be, but not every cassava acre is equal. Profit depends on yield per hectare, buyer price, distance to processors, labour at harvest, disease pressure, and whether roots are sold fresh or converted into a higher-value product. A raw-root farm may look profitable on paper and still fail if harvest labour, lorry hire, and buyer delays consume the margin.
How much capital does a cassava farm need?
A small farm can be planned under $75,000 if it leases land, hires tractor services, and sells roots locally. A mechanized 20-hectare farm with irrigation, storage, and working capital can move into the $95,000-$245,000 range. A 50-hectare integrated farm with drying, chipping, or processing can require several hundred thousand dollars before the first full harvest.
How long before harvest revenue arrives?
Most cassava plans should assume a 10-12 month first harvest for food markets and a longer 15-20 month window for some industrial root or starch-content targets. The cash-flow model needs enough working capital for land preparation, planting, weeding, crop protection, staff, fuel, and transport before meaningful revenue arrives.
What buyer evidence should go in the plan?
Use processor letters, price sheets, signed memoranda, buyer emails, delivery specifications, collection schedules, and rejected-load rules. If the farm will sell to gari makers, starch mills, ethanol plants, or fresh food distributors, the plan should show buyer names, weekly or monthly tonnage, payment terms, and route-to-market costs.

Startup Costs and Funding Model
Cassava startup cost is not one number. It is a set of choices: lease or buy land, manual or mechanized preparation, rain-fed or irrigated production, fresh roots or processing, owned fleet or hired transport, and direct buyer contracts or aggregator sales. Public startup-cost benchmarks put a small cassava farming setup at $43,600-$131,500, with line items for land, crop inputs, farm equipment, irrigation, infrastructure, licenses, and distribution Startup Cost Benchmark, 2025. That benchmark is useful, but Avvale would not use it alone. A serious plan should build costs from the field design.
For a small 5-hectare farm, Avvale would usually start with a $28,000-$72,000 planning range if the land is leased, tractor services are hired, irrigation is limited, and the crop is sold as fresh roots or simple chips. The planting material line deserves special care. The IITA cassava cropping guide recommends 1 m x 1 m spacing, or 10,000 plants per hectare, with a higher density possible for upright varieties and stem multiplication IITA, 2016. FAO farmer field school material gives the same optimal 10,000 plants per hectare basis and notes that availability of cassava cuttings can shape plot size FAO, 2014. A founder planting 20 hectares therefore needs a plan for roughly 200,000 cuttings plus replacements, not a vague seed budget.
Disease-free stems matter because cassava is vegetatively propagated. The RTB/BASICS quality seed work in Nigeria highlights how planting material can carry cassava mosaic disease and cassava brown streak disease, and why seed certification improves traceability and pest visibility RTB/BASICS, 2024. The cost of better cuttings can feel high in month one, but the cost of infected planting material is usually higher: uneven stands, lower root yield, rejected stems, and no credible story for institutional buyers.
Harvest timing drives working capital. Farm Radio's cassava production backgrounder for Cote d'Ivoire says farmers may harvest from 10 months after planting, from the 12th month for local consumption, and between 15 and 20 months for industrial factory use Farm Radio, 2021. That means the plan should not show sales in month three unless it is selling stems, operating as an aggregator, or buying roots from third parties. Most owner cash pressure appears before the first big root sale, not after the farm becomes mature.
Use the startup table as a decision tool. If the founder has strong buyer letters but limited capital, the first-year plan might lease less land, use contractors, avoid a factory, and sell roots plus dried chips. If the founder owns land and has processor relationships, the plan can justify storage, drying, and a stronger equipment base. If the founder wants a starch plant on day one, the plan needs more than ambition: it needs engineering quotes, energy assumptions, waste handling, water use, quality specs, buyer contracts, and experienced operations leadership.
Equipment, Suppliers, and Field Setup
The equipment list should match the business model. A raw-root farm does not need the same assets as a high-quality cassava flour producer, and a 5-hectare pilot should not carry the machinery burden of a 100-hectare estate. This is where many plans become too expensive. They include a tractor, harvester, processing plant, generator, truck, and packaging line before the buyer base is proven. A staged plan is usually more credible.
Field production setup
- Land preparation: tractor hire, plough, harrow, ridger or mounding labour, pegging lines, soil sampling, drainage channels, and erosion control.
- Planting material: certified or trusted stems, shade storage before planting, 20-25 cm cuttings, gap-filling reserve, and field records by plot.
- Crop care: hoes, cutlasses, knapsack sprayers, protective equipment, weed-control plan, pest monitoring sheets, and spray records.
- Harvest handling: machetes, digging forks or lifter attachment, sacks, crates, weighing scale, tarpaulins, lorry access, and loader labour.
- Basic quality control: moisture checks for chips, root maturity records, variety records, rejected-load log, and buyer feedback file.
Processing-led setup
- Chips: washer, peeler or manual peeling station, chipper, raised drying platform, tarpaulins, moisture meter, storage shed, bag stitcher, pallets, and pest-safe storage.
- Gari or flour: grater, hydraulic press, fermentation bags or tanks, fryer or roasting pan, sieve, milling machine, packaging sealer, food-grade contact surfaces, and staff hygiene area.
- Starch: washer, rasper, extractor, settling or separation system, dewatering, dryer, milling, bagging, water management, energy supply, and lab controls.
- Logistics: motorcycle or pickup for field supervision, hired lorries for harvest peaks, collection calendar, and a route plan to processors or wholesale markets.

Valour Agrifood Ventures says its Delta State facility can process 140 tonnes per day and more than 50,000 tonnes annually, while working with farmers managing more than 5,000 hectares of cassava farms Valour Agrifood Ventures, 2026. These examples help founders understand what scaled processors look for: volume, traceability, quality, and reliable timing.
For software, keep the stack simple. A farm can start with Google Sheets or Excel for plot budgets, QuickBooks or Xero for bookkeeping, WhatsApp Business for buyer communication, KoboToolbox or Google Forms for field collection, and a farm management platform such as Farmbrite or Agrivi once acreage and staff justify it. The plan should not make software the strategy. It should show how records protect revenue: plot-by-plot costs, cuttings source, spray date, harvest date, tonnes delivered, buyer rejection notes, and payment ageing.
If the business will process food, the layout needs a hygiene map before equipment is ordered. Raw roots should not cross finished flour, waste water needs a path, staff need handwashing and protective clothing, and packaging must be stored away from pests and moisture. Revenue Streams and Unit Economics
Cassava revenue is easiest to model in layers. Layer one is fresh roots sold at farm gate or delivered to buyers. Layer two is dried chips or simple aggregation, where the farm reduces perishability and can sell into feed, ethanol, or industrial channels. Layer three is food-grade products such as gari, HQCF, or packaged flour. Layer four is starch or sweetener processing, which requires more capital, energy, water control, and technical staff. Each layer can be valid, but the plan should not pretend a farm can do all four in year one.
Start with yield. A conservative 20-hectare plan might assume 18 tonnes per hectare, giving 360 tonnes of roots in the first full harvest. At a farm-gate equivalent of $95 per tonne, that is $34,200 gross revenue before harvest labour, transport, rejects, overhead, and finance. At 25 tonnes per hectare, the same farm produces 500 tonnes; at $95 per tonne, gross revenue rises to $47,500. The difference is not marketing copy. It is stand establishment, variety, weeding, rainfall, soil, disease management, and buyer timing.
Now add a processing case. If the farm converts a portion of roots into dried chips, the model must account for conversion ratio, drying losses, labour, spoilage, packaging, and moisture rejection. A simple planning case might allocate 70% of roots to fresh processor sales, 20% to chips during harvest pressure, and 10% to stem multiplication or contingency. The chip route can improve resilience when fresh buyers delay collection, but it also requires space, weather control, moisture testing, and storage discipline.
Starch-linked pricing needs a separate caution. IMARC's Q4 2025 price tracker shows a wide spread between Thailand at USD 455 per metric ton and Germany at USD 1,467 per metric ton for cassava starch IMARC Group, 2026. Those are starch prices, not root prices. A farmer selling roots into a starch processor must share value with the processor, energy supplier, transport provider, financier, and distributor. If the plan simply multiplies root tonnes by retail starch prices, it will fail lender review.
Worked example: 20-hectare root plus chips model
Assume 20 hectares, 18 tonnes per hectare, and 360 tonnes total roots. Fresh processor sales take 252 tonnes at $95 per tonne, producing $23,940. Chips use 72 tonnes of roots, with the dried product sold under a conservative processor quote after conversion and drying costs; Avvale would model this as a separate line, not as root-price revenue. The remaining 36 tonnes equivalent supports rejected roots, home-market sales, or planting material. If direct field and harvest costs reach $22,000 and overhead reaches $9,000, the farm needs chips, better yield, or a stronger buyer price to generate a proper owner return.
Margin ranges should be honest. A raw-root farm that leases land, pays hired labour, and sells to a single processor may finish with 10-18% net margin in a normal year. A better-run farm with low land cost, strong field supervision, disease-free planting material, and a drying route can target 18-32% net margin. A processor can exceed that in a strong market, but only after absorbing technical risk, energy cost, waste handling, food safety, working capital, buyer credit, and maintenance.
The revenue plan should also address buyer concentration. Krungsri reports that China took 59% of Thai native starch exports by volume in 2024, and that Chinese demand changes hit Thai cassava chips in 2023-2024 Krungsri Research, 2025. Even if your farm is not in Thailand, the lesson applies: one buyer can make the forecast look clean and fragile at the same time. Include a primary buyer, two fallback buyers, a local fresh market route, and a storage or drying answer for harvest weeks when collection is delayed.
A fundable forecast should show monthly cash, not only annual profit. Cassava has a long crop cycle, so the model needs a planting calendar, weeding calendar, crop protection calendar, harvest month, sales month, and payment month. It should include bad-debt allowance if selling on credit, a rejected-load allowance, a disease contingency, and a transport-price sensitivity. Loan Evidence and Funding Routes
Funding a cassava farm is easier when the plan separates farm finance from processing finance. Farm lenders usually want land control, owner experience, cash-flow coverage, collateral, off-take evidence, and a risk plan for weather, disease, and price movement. Processing lenders want those items plus equipment quotes, plant layout, utilities, waste handling, food safety controls, and confirmed buyers for the processed product.
For US farms, USDA Farm Service Agency financing is often more relevant than a standard small-business loan. The FSA Direct Farm Operating Loan page says operating loan funds can cover farm operating expenses such as seed, fertilizer, pesticides, supplies, cash rent, certain initial processing, minor repairs, land and water development, and loan closing or borrower training costs USDA FSA, 2026. It also states the maximum Direct Farm Operating Loan is $400,000, with no down payment requirement, and that larger purchases such as equipment may have terms up to 7 years USDA FSA, 2026. A cassava plan aimed at US production should show why the farm enterprise is eligible, how the owner meets managerial-ability expectations, and how repayment lines up with harvest timing.
SBA funding may still matter for processing, distribution, logistics, or food-supply-chain expansion. The SBA 7(a) page states that the programme can be used for working capital, real estate, machinery and equipment, supplies, business debt refinancing, and ownership changes, with a maximum loan amount of $5 million SBA, 2026. SBA also announced a Grocery Guarantee for food-supply-chain businesses, with a 90% federal guarantee under the International Trade Loan programme and eligibility expansion for several agricultural and logistics NAICS groups from 1 May SBA, 2026. The plan should be careful: primary crop production, processing, and logistics may fit different lender boxes, so the use of funds must be clear.
For UK founders, the government-backed Start Up Loan is smaller but useful for early research, pilot trading, website, insurance, bookkeeping, and light equipment. Business.gov.uk states that founders can borrow between £500 and £25,000, repay over 1-5 years, pay a fixed 7.5% interest rate, and receive mentoring in the first 12 months Business.gov.uk, 2026. That loan will not fund a serious cassava processing plant, but it can support a UK importer, distributor, specialist food brand, or planning-stage agribusiness preparing a larger application.
For Nigeria or West Africa, funding evidence should focus on buyer contracts, outgrower structure, processing relationships, and disease-free planting material. The Nigeria agrifood investment plan identifies weak yields, limited processing, inadequate infrastructure, and credit access as barriers in cassava Nigeria Federal Ministry of Agriculture, 2026. That means a stronger proposal should not only ask for money. It should show how capital fixes a specific bottleneck: stems, mechanization, drying, transport, storage, or buyer aggregation.

Licensing, Food Rules, and Plant Health
Cassava is a farm crop, a food ingredient, and a plant-health risk depending on what the business actually does. Growing roots on controlled land is different from importing cuttings, selling certified stems, distributing fresh roots, milling flour, producing starch, exporting food-grade product, or supplying livestock feed. The business plan should split these activities so compliance is not treated as one generic licence.
United States
- Farm setup: state business registration, land-use permission, water rights where irrigation is used, local tax registrations, and farm insurance.
- Plant material import: USDA APHIS says its ACIR database covers fresh fruit and vegetables, processed fruit and vegetables, plants and seeds for planting and propagation, soil, and other plant products, and APHIS eFile is used for import and transit permits USDA APHIS, 2026.
- Wholesale quality: USDA AMS says there are no US grade standards for cassava, but it publishes Specialty Crops Inspection Division instructions for cassava inspection and identification USDA AMS, 2026.
- Processing: food facility registration, state health requirements, product labelling, food safety plans, and product liability insurance may apply if the farm makes flour, starch, chips, or packaged food.
- Crop protection: pesticide applicator rules vary by state; use only approved products and keep spray records, worker safety records, and label compliance evidence.
United Kingdom and Great Britain
- Commercial food handling: GOV.UK says a business that sells, cooks, stores, handles, prepares, or distributes food may need to register with the local authority, and in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland registration is required at least 28 days before trading GOV.UK/FSA, 2023.
- Plant health imports: the UK Plant Health Information Portal says high-risk and medium-risk A imports need a phytosanitary certificate, IPAFFS pre-notification, and SPS checks; medium-risk B goods require a phytosanitary certificate but not pre-notification UK Plant Health Portal, 2026.

- Professional pesticide use: HSE states that anyone using a professional plant protection product must have a recognised specified certificate or work under direct supervision of someone with that certificate HSE, 2021.
- UK farming reality: outdoor commercial cassava farming is not a normal UK field-crop model, so UK plans usually focus on import, distribution, processing, ethnic grocery supply, greenhouse trials, or overseas farm ownership with UK-based sales.
Nigeria and West Africa
- Seed and stems: RTB/BASICS notes that the National Agricultural Seed Council has been developing and regulating cassava seed certification, with certified seed levels and an e-certification direction for traceability RTB/BASICS, 2024.
- Food-grade processing: processors producing high-quality cassava flour, starch, sorbitol, or packaged food need to plan for facility standards, product registration, labelling, food safety, and buyer audit requirements.
- Processor evidence: DADTCO Rivers reports NAFDAC and ISO 22000 certification and engagement with more than 3,000 smallholder farmers Grand View Research, 2025; use named examples as benchmarking signals, then verify local obligations with counsel and regulators before launch.
Compliance language should be plain in the plan. Say exactly what the business will do in year one, which licences or registrations apply, who is responsible, when applications happen, and what cost is in the budget. Do not bury regulation in an appendix. Plant health, food safety, pesticide control, and buyer audits can stop sales even when the crop grows well.

The weakest cassava plans usually fail before the financial model. They use impressive market-size claims, then skip the field-level assumptions that determine whether the farm can sell a clean tonne of roots at a fair price. Use this checklist before sending the plan to a lender, grant body, investor, or processor.
- No buyer specification: The plan says processors will buy cassava, but it does not state variety, root age, starch content, foreign matter limits, moisture requirement for chips, payment timing, or who pays transport.
- Weak cutting source: The founder prices cheap stems and ignores disease. This can create poor stands, uneven roots, and no credibility with serious buyers.
- Factory too early: A full starch or flour plant appears in year one even though the founder has not proven yield, procurement, staff, energy cost, or buyer credit control.
- No harvest labour plan: The budget includes planting labour but not the peak harvest team, loaders, road access, lorry queues, or wet-weather delays.
- Bad cash timing: The model shows annual profit but ignores the months before first harvest and the buyer payment lag after delivery.
- Single-buyer dependence: One off-take letter supports all revenue. A better plan includes two fallback buyers and a temporary drying or local market route.
- Ignoring regulation: The plan treats roots, cuttings, flour, and starch as one activity. Plant health, food registration, pesticide rules, and product registration can differ by product and country.
A strong plan does the opposite. It uses conservative yield, named buyers, staged equipment, a realistic harvest calendar, and a clear decision rule for expansion.
