It also pays to model the trim and waste line honestly. Converting board generates offcuts on every run, and a plant that runs at 85 to 90 percent material yield is meaningfully more profitable than one running at 75 percent. Baling and selling that trim back into the recycling stream turns a disposal cost into a small recurring credit. Neither number is large on its own, but together yield and trim recovery move the net margin by a point or two, and on a business whose net margin starts in single digits, a point or two is the difference between a plant that services its debt comfortably and one that does not.

Most guides stop at "raw material is expensive."
