What equipment do you need for a hemp processing plant?
At minimum: a decorticator (ranging from $50,000–$150,000 for micro-scale units to $1.5M+ for mid-scale lines from suppliers like Andritz Laroche), material handling and baling equipment, dust collection and fire suppression systems, and moisture/THC testing capability. Full turnkey systems from suppliers like Temafa run into the multi-million-dollar range and are typically not the right starting point for a first-time operator.
What's the difference between hemp processing and CBD extraction?
Hemp processing (decortication) mechanically separates raw hemp stalk into hurd and bast fiber for use in construction materials, textiles, and insulation — no cannabinoid extraction involved. CBD extraction is a separate chemical process (commonly CO2 extraction) that pulls cannabinoids from hemp flower and leaf material for the supplement and wellness market. Some operations do both, but they require different equipment, different licensing (in the UK, the industrial hemp licence explicitly excludes flower and leaf use), and different buyers.
Can I get an SBA loan for a hemp processing plant?
Yes — the SBA has explicitly expanded 7(a) and 504 loan access to hemp manufacturers, and hemp farming and processing is classified under NAICS code 111998. For a first-time, lower-capital entry point, smaller micro-decortication units are available from specialist fiber-equipment manufacturers at a fraction of the cost. A secondary market for used decortication and textile-processing equipment also exists — several equipment brokers list reconditioned Laroche-class lines, which can meaningfully reduce your equipment line item if you're comfortable with the maintenance and downtime trade-offs of used machinery versus new.
Can a hemp processing plant also grow its own hemp?
Yes, and some operators do combine both, but it's worth thinking through deliberately rather than by default. Growing your own acreage adds a USDA hemp producer license (or equivalent state grower license) on top of your processing license, plus crop risk that a pure processing model avoids.
