The line founders under-budget is registration. The equipment is visible and quotable; the data package is not. One more distinction the plan must handle cleanly: manufacturing for the domestic market versus importing or exporting. A US establishment that imports actives or finished product is still subject to FIFRA and must hold an establishment number, and an exporter faces the destination country's own registration regime on top of US rules. If the model assumes overseas sales, the registration cost and lead time for each target country belong in the financials, because they gate revenue exactly as the domestic registration does.

Mistakes That Sink First Plants

These are the errors that show up in weak plans and, worse, in real failed launches. Fix them before an investor finds them.

  • Assuming one EPA registration covers every state. Federal registration is only the start; most states levy their own annual product fees, and a national distribution plan that ignores them understates ongoing cost by tens of thousands of dollars a year.
  • Budgeting for the plant but not the data package. Founders quote reactors and filling lines to the dollar, then treat toxicology and efficacy studies as a footnote. For a novel active, that footnote can exceed the entire equipment budget.
