The trap is reading that $889,000 as profit. Staff for a seasonal shop is expensive because skilled boot fitters and technicians are scarce and concentrated into a few months. Premises near a lift base carry a heavy rent, and the fleet has to be financed before a single dollar comes in. Once the fleet is amortised over three to four seasons and the off-season carries some revenue, net margins of 16-29% are realistic. In year one, with the full fleet bought up front, expect margins to be thin or negative, which is exactly why the financial model must show the survival path, not just the steady state.
The decision with the most impact in the revenue section is utilisation, not headline price. Moving average utilisation from 50% to 60% on that same fleet adds roughly $162,000 of revenue at no extra capital cost. The catch specific to this niche is seasonality: a 7(a) lender will stress-test your ability to service debt through a five-month dead period. Binding Liability & Legal Setup

What is specific, and what competitors almost never explain, is the binding-adjustment standards regime, because that is where a rental shop's real legal exposure lives. Choosing Where to Put the Shop
Location decides more of a ski rental shop's revenue than any other early choice, and it is where the plan should show the sharpest thinking. There are three viable position types, and each one carries a different cost structure and customer profile that the financial model has to reflect.

The domestic market is served by dry-slope and indoor-snow-centre catchments plus pre-trip mail-order hire that ships to alpine resorts, so the location question often becomes a fulfilment-and-logistics question rather than a high-street one. Whichever model the plan picks, it should quantify the catchment: how many skier-days pass through the area in a season, what share is realistically addressable, and how the shop's position converts that share into rental days. A location section that names a town but skips the skier-day math is the section a lender flags first.
Site selection also drives the off-season strategy. A feeder-town unit on a year-round lease has to earn its rent in summer, which pushes the plan toward bike or paddleboard hire from the same premises. A seasonal slopeside lease that only runs through winter avoids that carrying cost but removes the cross-season revenue line. The plan should make this trade explicit rather than leaving it implied.
Operations & Seasonal Staffing
The operational core of a ski rental shop is a tight loop: fit, adjust, document, return, inspect, re-rent. Each rented unit cycles through that loop many times across a season, and the speed and quality of the loop is what separates a shop that turns its fleet efficiently from one that loses customers to queues and bad fits.
Boot fitting and binding adjustment are the bottleneck and the liability point at once.
