Emissions & Permits: Tier 4, MCPD, CPCB IV+
Emissions law is the part of this business that separates operators who can deliver from operators who get a unit rejected on a customer's site. Treat it as a sales asset, not a chore — being the supplier who shows up with legally sitable, fully certified iron wins repeat work.
United States — EPA Tier 4 Final
Non-emergency stationary compression-ignition engines must be factory-certified to EPA Tier 4 Final under 40 CFR Part 60 Subpart IIII, which pulls in the nonroad standards of 40 CFR Part 1039. Tier 4 Final demands diesel particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction with diesel exhaust fluid, cutting NOx and particulate by roughly 90% versus an unregulated engine. There is a key carve-out: emergency standby engines of 37kW and above can meet Tier 2 or Tier 3 instead, but "emergency" is narrow — testing and maintenance are capped at around 100 hours a year and peak-shaving or non-emergency demand response is prohibited Global Power, 2026. United Kingdom — MCPD & Stage V

These permits protect air only and control emissions of SO₂, NOx and dust. - Prime vs standby rating: a prime-rated unit can run continuously as a main power source; a standby unit is designed only for outage backup and is rated for limited annual hours. Confusing the two oversells what your fleet can legally and mechanically do.
- Tier 4 Final: the current US EPA emissions tier for non-emergency stationary engines, requiring DPF and SCR after-treatment.

- Load bank: a device that applies an artificial electrical load so you can test a unit at capacity without a live site — the backbone of credible maintenance contracts.
- Utilisation: the share of available days a fleet unit is actually out earning. The single most important operating metric in the whole plan.
Day-Rates, Margins & Fleet Payback
This is the section lenders actually read. Generic margin ranges are useless here; what matters is the relationship between day-rate, utilisation and the cost of the iron. Build it from published rates, then haircut for transport and downtime.
What units rent and sell for
