Five Ways New Mills Lose Money

  • Pricing without a machine-hour model. Quoting per metre on instinct wins long jobs that quietly run below cost. Build the cost model first, then quote from it.
  • Buying the flagship line before the anchor contract. A gleaming machine with no off-take is a depreciating liability. Secure demand, then size the capex to it.
  • Skipping the certification buyers demand. OEKO-TEX, flammability and application standards are purchase-order conditions, not nice-to-haves. Budget and schedule them from day one.
  • Under-sizing power and effluent in the lease. Coating and finishing need three-phase power, air and consent to discharge. Retrofitting a cheap unit can cost more than the rent it saved.
  • Ignoring input-price volatility. Yarn and polymer prices swing hard. A forecast with a single fixed material cost is fiction; model a band and hedge or price-adjust where you can.

Commercially, B2B buyers routinely require OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and application-specific standards (automotive, medical, PPE), so certification is usually a purchase-order condition even where it is not a legal one.
What is the difference between technical textiles and nonwovens?
Technical textiles is the end-use category: fabric engineered for performance rather than appearance, spanning woven, knitted, braided and nonwoven constructions. Nonwovens is a manufacturing method – bonding fibres mechanically, thermally or chemically without weaving or knitting. Most nonwovens are technical textiles, but plenty of technical textiles are woven or knitted, so the terms overlap without being the same thing.
