Where the Money Actually Is in Vacuum Interrupters
The vacuum interrupter is the sealed ceramic and copper bottle that does the switching inside a medium-voltage circuit breaker, contactor, recloser or ring main unit. Contacts separate inside a hard vacuum, the arc that forms is extinguished at the first current zero, and the device closes again tens of thousands of times over a service life measured in decades. It is a small component with an unusually concentrated supply chain, and that concentration is exactly where the commercial opportunity sits.
Sizing the market honestly matters, because the figures published by research houses differ by more than 50%. Fortune Business Insights, 2025 puts the global market at USD 2.78 billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.92 billion in 2026 and USD 4.05 billion by 2034 on a 4.16% compound rate. MarketsandMarkets, 2025 models a smaller base of USD 2.5 billion in 2025 growing to USD 3.36 billion by 2030 at roughly 6%. Press coverage of a third forecast places the market at USD 4.22 billion by 2031. Quote a single number without naming the source and a technically literate lender discounts everything that follows. Quote the range, name the publishers, and state which definition you are using.
Supply is dominated by a handful of names. ABB, Eaton, Siemens AG, Shaanxi Baoguang Vacuum Electric Device Company and Meidensha Corporation are repeatedly identified as the leading producers, and the top five vendors are variously estimated to hold between 49% and 58% of global revenue. In the high-voltage segment specifically, Intel Market Research, 2025 attributes USD 62.30 million to ABB, USD 55.65 million to Eaton, USD 54.10 million to Siemens, USD 24.00 million to Meidensha and USD 20.40 million to Shaanxi Baoguang. Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric are significant in Japan and across Asia Pacific.
Three Entry Routes, Three Completely Different Businesses
Almost every plan we see on this subject fails in the same place: it treats "vacuum interrupter business" as one thing. It is three things, with capital requirements an order of magnitude apart. Decide which one you are before writing your executive summary: the funding ask, the staffing plan and the risk register all change with it.
Route A, aftermarket test, remanufacture and retrofit. You buy bottles from established producers, then strip, rebuild, retest and recertify breakers for distribution network operators, industrial plants, mines, steelworks, hospitals and data centres. Vacuum Interrupters LLC, founded in 2010 and part of Group CBS in Houston, Texas, built its position precisely here, supplying replacement products for the ageing fleet of interrupters still in service worldwide. In the UK, Vacuum Interrupters Limited in Rugby, Warwickshire (Companies House number 05517641) combines research, specialised manufacturing processes and replacement, repair and testing services. This is the only route a first-time founder should normally plan around.
Route B, assembly and integration. You buy bottles and build the complete switching device: vacuum circuit breakers, contactors, auto-reclosers, retrofit modules for obsolete panel types, or ring main units. Your engineering value sits in the operating mechanism, the primary conductors, the insulation system, the protection interface and the factory acceptance test regime. This is where most independent switchgear businesses in Europe, India and the Gulf actually operate.
Route C, original-equipment bottle manufacture. You make the interrupter itself. That means copper-chromium contact production, metallised alumina ceramic cylinders, stainless bellows, arc shields, getter placement, a vacuum brazing furnace and an exhaust and pinch-off station, plus a full type-approval programme per design family. Published descriptions of the process are precise about why it is hard: the temporarily assembled interrupter is held in a vacuum furnace at no less than 900 °C but below the melting point of copper for at least ten minutes, then cooled slowly under vacuum, and contact alloys are produced by powder sintering, vacuum infiltration, vacuum arc melting or vacuum casting. Engineering, manufacturing and testing cycles here are long, and that is the barrier protecting the incumbents.
The demand picture is unusually easy to evidence for all three routes, because it is written into law. Under Regulation (EU) 2024/573, new medium-voltage switchgear up to and including 24 kV may not use SF6 or other fluorinated gases for insulation or arc quenching from 1 January 2026, with the prohibition extending to equipment above 24 kV and up to 52 kV from 1 January 2030. Vacuum switching, usually paired with clean air or solid insulation, is the principal compliant technology at those voltages. Add grid reinforcement spending, data centre construction and the replacement cycle on equipment installed in the 1980s and 1990s, and you have three independent demand drivers you can each cite rather than one generic growth claim.
Related reading on the adjacent product categories your customers also buy: our air insulated switchgear business plan template and air circuit breaker business plan template cover the enclosure and low-voltage sides of the same panel.
The Questions Lenders and Buyers Ask First
These are the questions that come up in the first fifteen minutes of a funding conversation or a utility supplier audit. If your plan answers them cleanly in its own words, you will spend the rest of the meeting on numbers rather than on definitions.
What does a vacuum interrupter actually do inside a circuit breaker?
It is the simplest arc-interrupting system in use: in principle just one fixed and one moving contact inside a sealed vacuum vessel. When the contacts part under load an arc forms and vaporises a little contact material, but with no gas to sustain it the arc extinguishes at the first natural current zero and the vacuum re-establishes dielectric strength almost immediately. No oil, no SF6, no arc chutes, no exhaust. That simplicity is why the device dominates distribution-voltage switching and why it scales down into contactors and up, with clean-air insulation, into transmission-class breakers.
How long does a vacuum interrupter last?
Shelf life is typically around 20 years, and in-service leak rates are normally compatible with a working life beyond 30 years. Contact life comfortably exceeds the roughly 30,000 mechanical operations expected from a vacuum circuit breaker. End of life arrives either as contact erosion of about 3 mm against a total contact travel of roughly 14 mm, with each contact typically losing 3 to 5 mm of material over a full service life, or as a measurable deterioration in high-voltage withstand capability. For your revenue model, that 30-year figure is the whole ballgame: the installed base from the late 1980s onward is now reaching it.
Can a vacuum interrupter be repaired or re-evacuated?
No. It is sealed for life, brazed under vacuum and then pinched off. Once vacuum integrity is lost the bottle is scrap and the only remedy is replacement. Everything around it is rebuildable: frame, mechanism, bushings, current transformers, wiring, protection relays. Be explicit about this in your plan. Investors who have been pitched a "vacuum interrupter refurbishment" business before will assume you mean bottle repair, and that assumption kills credibility fast.
How do you prove a bottle still holds vacuum?
In the factory, with a Penning or magnetron discharge test: a high DC voltage is applied across the open contacts, producing a small leakage current, and a strong magnetic field traps that current so the additional current measured is proportional to the number of residual gas molecules inside. In the field, an AC high-voltage withstand test is the practical and effective method for monitoring long-term vacuum integrity. Both capabilities need to appear in your operations plan and your capital expenditure schedule, because an aftermarket business that cannot certify what it ships has no product.
Why are vacuum interrupters replacing SF6 switchgear?
Because SF6 is being legislated out of distribution switchgear. The EU deadline of 1 January 2026 for new equipment up to 24 kV is the sharpest version, but the direction is global: in the United States the EPA limits annual leakage from new SF6 handling equipment to 1% and from existing equipment to 3%, and requires annual SF6 emissions reporting from transmission and distribution operators under Subpart DD of the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. California has its own Air Resources Board rule. Siemens has publicly demonstrated vacuum plus clean-air switching to 145 kV. Every utility now has a technology transition on its capital plan, and transitions create openings for suppliers who were not previously on the approved list.
What It Costs to Reach First Revenue
The headline band for a credible, fundable first-stage business is $180,000 to $1.4 million in the United States, or £145,000 to £1.1 million in the United Kingdom. The lower end of that range buys a remanufacture and test bay. The upper end buys a small assembly operation building finished switching devices. Full bottle manufacture sits outside this band entirely, at roughly $3.5 million to $12 million, or £2.8 million to £9.5 million, driven almost entirely by the vacuum furnace line, the exhaust and pinch-off station and the type-approval programme.
Line-by-Line Capital Requirement
- Industrial unit, deposit plus six months rent: $28,000–$95,000 (£22,000–£75,000) for 2,500 to 7,000 sq ft with a three-phase supply and adequate ceiling height for panel handling
- AC hipot / dielectric withstand test set: $14,000–$38,000 (£11,000–£30,000). A 12 kV class product is typically proved at 42 kV withstand
- Penning (magnetron) discharge vacuum-integrity tester: $18,000–$45,000 (£14,000–£36,000)
- Helium mass-spectrometer leak detector: $22,000–$60,000 (£18,000–£48,000)
- Micro-ohmmeter plus timing and travel analyser: $9,000–$26,000 (£7,000–£21,000)
- Assembly jigs, torque tooling, insulated benches, controlled assembly area: $15,000–$55,000 (£12,000–£44,000)
- Opening inventory of bottles, mechanisms, bushings and bellows: $40,000–$320,000 (£32,000–£260,000)
- Type-approval and witnessed-testing programme, per design family: $60,000–$600,000 (£48,000–£480,000)
- Product liability and professional indemnity cover, year one: $9,000–$32,000 (£7,000–£26,000)
- ISO 9001 certification, quality manual, calibration contracts: $12,000–$30,000 (£9,500–£24,000)
- Working capital, six months: $90,000–$400,000 (£72,000–£320,000). Utility and contractor payment terms of 60 to 90 days are normal and will eat more cash than your equipment list
The Line Everyone Underestimates
Type approval. A witnessed test programme on a new design family, booked at an independent short-circuit station, is commonly budgeted at $60,000 for a narrow retrofit variant and can pass $600,000 for a full breaker family across multiple ratings. Our own estimate, based on client programmes rather than a published tariff, is that a single design family tested to the current edition of IEC 62271-100 lands between $220,000 and $600,000 once sample units, travel, retests and engineering time are included. Amortise $300,000 across the first 25,000 units shipped and you are carrying $12 per unit on a product whose component wholesale price is $55 to $78. That single calculation is the difference between a plan that survives technical due diligence and one that does not.
Funding Routes That Fit This Sector
In the United States, the SBA 7(a) programme covers up to $5 million, with terms up to ten years for equipment and twenty-five for real estate, and the 504 programme is well suited to a building plus test-bay fit-out. In the United Kingdom, the Start Up Loans scheme offers up to £25,000 at 6% fixed with free mentoring, which realistically funds a single test bench rather than a business, so most UK entrants pair it with an asset-backed facility, invoice finance against utility receivables, and Innovate UK grant funding where a genuine SF6-replacement innovation claim exists. Comparable programmes operate in Canada through BDC and in the UAE through the Khalifa Fund. Our business plan writer service builds the lender pack around whichever of these you are targeting.
Plant, Test Gear and Tooling, Line by Line
This is the schedule your lender turns to first, because it is the part of the plan with collateral value. Split it into three tiers so a reader sees which route you are funding.
Tier 1: Essential for Any Route (Test and Certification Bay)
- AC high-voltage withstand (hipot) test set, 60–100 kV capability: $14,000–$38,000. Proves dielectric integrity across open contacts and phase to earth. The practical field method for monitoring long-term vacuum integrity
- Penning / magnetron discharge vacuum tester: $18,000–$45,000. The quantitative check on residual gas, applying DC voltage with a superimposed magnetic field
- Helium mass-spectrometer leak detector: $22,000–$60,000. Needed for any seal or braze work and for incoming inspection disputes with suppliers
- Digital micro-ohmmeter, 100–600 A injection: $4,500–$14,000. Contact resistance across the main circuit
- Circuit breaker timing and travel analyser: $6,000–$22,000. Captures contact-wipe, travel curve, simultaneity and coil current signatures
- Primary current injection set, 1,000–5,000 A: $12,000–$40,000. Temperature-rise verification and protection coordination checks
- Calibration contracts and traceable reference standards: $4,000–$11,000 per year. Non-negotiable for ISO 9001 and for any utility audit
Tier 2: Assembly and Integration (Route B)
- Panel and breaker assembly jigs, per product family: $8,000–$35,000
- Calibrated torque tooling and documented torque schedules: $3,000–$9,000. Interrupter stem and flexible connector joints are torque-critical and a recurring warranty cause
- CNC machining capacity for end plates, stems and current carriers: $45,000–$180,000 to own, or budget $3,500–$12,000 a month subcontracted, which is the right answer for the first two years
- Overhead gantry or jib crane, 1–3 tonne: $9,000–$30,000. Breaker trucks and panel sections are not two-person lifts
- Protection relay test set: $11,000–$32,000 for secondary injection and factory acceptance testing of the protection interface
Tier 3: Bottle Manufacture (Route C Only)
- Vacuum brazing furnace: the dominant single capital item. Process descriptions specify a continuous hold at no less than 900 °C, below the melting point of copper, for at least ten minutes, followed by slow cooling under vacuum
- Exhaust, bake-out and pinch-off station with turbomolecular and ion pumping: the step that actually creates the product
- Copper-chromium contact production: powder sintering, vacuum infiltration, vacuum arc melting or vacuum casting, each with different tooling and yield characteristics
- Metallised alumina ceramic cylinders: normally bought in; surface preparation includes forming a chromium film and converting it by heating in air to a chromium oxide layer before assembly
- Stainless steel bellows, arc or vapour shields, getter material, end plates: bought-in components with long qualification cycles
- Residual gas analysis and destructive-sample teardown capability for process validation
Named Supply Options Worth Quoting in Your Plan
For bought-in bottles at assembly volumes, the realistic supplier set spans the majors and the Chinese specialists: ABB, Eaton, Siemens, Meidensha Corporation, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric at the premium and utility-approved end; Shaanxi Baoguang Vacuum Electric Device Company, Wuhan Feite Electric and Hubei Jucro Electric among the high-volume Chinese producers whose 12 kV, 630 A units list at roughly $55 to $78 per piece with minimum order quantities as low as three. Schneider Electric and nuventura are relevant as SF6-free system competitors rather than component suppliers. Name at least four suppliers with indicative landed prices and lead times: a reader who sees a single-source bill of materials marks the whole operations section down for supply risk. Our market research and content service builds that supplier table and prices it properly.
Pricing, Margins and the Numbers That Decide Viability
There are four distinct revenue lines available, and they carry very different margins. Mixing them deliberately is what makes the business work, because the high-margin service line funds the low-margin product line while you build an approval history.
Revenue Lines and Realistic Pricing
- Component distribution: $55–$78 per 12 kV, 630 A bottle at volume, reselling at $110–$190 into the trade. Gross margin 12–20%. Low effort, low defensibility, useful for keeping a catalogue alive
- Remanufactured breaker pole or retrofit module: $1,400–$3,200 per unit. Gross margin 22–34%. Against a finished new vacuum circuit breaker at $399 to $2,731 depending on specification and origin, your retrofit has to win on fit, lead time and avoided panel replacement, not on sticker price
- Field replacement and recommissioning: $1,600–$4,800 per job including labour, travel and certification. Gross margin 38–55%. This is the line that pays the rent
- Condition assessment and vacuum-integrity testing: $180–$420 per bottle, typically sold as a site sweep of 20 to 150 bottles. Gross margin 45–60% and, critically, it generates the replacement pipeline for everything above
- Annual framework agreement with a mid-size utility or industrial group: $250,000–$1.8 million a year. This is the outcome your three-year plan should be built to reach
Worked Example: A 900-Unit Retrofit Module Operation
Take a 12 kV retrofit module selling at $2,400. The bill of materials is three interrupter bottles at $72 each ($216), an operating mechanism at $410, frame, insulation and primary conductors at $380, and secondary wiring plus the protection interface at $265, giving $1,271 in materials. Direct labour runs 9.5 hours per module. Using the US Bureau of Labor Statistics OES data, May 2023, electrical, electronic and electromechanical assemblers (SOC 51-2028) earn a median $19.47 an hour, $40,490 a year, with the 75th percentile at $48,230 and the 90th at $59,310. Load the median to about $31.80 an hour for employer taxes, benefits, holiday and non-productive time and 9.5 hours costs $302. Factory acceptance testing, packing and outbound freight add $145.
Total direct cost is $1,718, leaving gross profit of $682 per module, a gross margin of 28.4%. At 900 modules a year that is $2.16 million of revenue and $614,000 of gross profit. Overhead of roughly $430,000 covers the lease, three salaried staff (a test engineer, a quality manager and a part-time commercial lead), insurance, calibration, software and the amortised type-test programme. Earnings before interest and tax land near $184,000, about 8.5% net. That is a normal, bankable number for light electrical manufacturing, and it is a far more useful figure to put in front of a lender than a sector-average margin lifted from a report.
Note what moves it. A $10 increase in landed bottle cost across three bottles costs you 1.25 percentage points of gross margin. One extra hour of assembly labour costs 1.3 points. Winning a single framework agreement at $600,000 a year with 40% service content adds more profit than a 20% increase in module volume. Sensitivity tables on exactly those three variables belong in your financial appendix.
Why Service Content Decides Survival
New-build switchgear sales are tendered, price-transparent and slow to win, and you will be bidding against companies with a thirty-year approval history and a global parts network. Service revenue is local, relationship-led, repeat, and priced on availability rather than on a bill of materials. The aftermarket businesses that scaled in this sector did so by owning the condition-assessment relationship first, then selling the hardware the assessment identified. Build the plan so service is 45% to 60% of year-one revenue and product becomes dominant only in years three to five, once you hold approvals and references.
SBA and UK Lending for NAICS 335313
Classify the business correctly before you apply, because the code drives both the size standard and the lender's internal risk grade. Vacuum interrupter and switching-device work maps to NAICS 335313, Switchgear and Switchboard Apparatus Manufacturing, which covers fabrication and assembly of switchgear and switchboard apparatus, factory testing, panels, breakers and control equipment, production quality records and factory acceptance test documentation. Published SBA size standards for the code are quoted as 1,250 employees on the employee-based table and $8 million in average annual receipts on the receipts-based table, depending on the programme. Either way, every realistic new entrant qualifies as a small business, so none of the small-business programmes are closed to you.
Useful cross-references when you build the funding section: IBISWorld's NAICS 335313 classification and the federal-contracting view at HigherGov, which is worth reading if you intend to sell to federal facilities, military bases or federal power administrations.
How to Structure the US Ask
- SBA 7(a), up to $5 million: the default for a mixed ask covering equipment, inventory and working capital. Terms reach ten years for equipment and twenty-five where real estate is included. Expect a personal guarantee and 10% to 20% equity injection on a startup file
- SBA 504: better if you are buying a building and fitting out a test bay, since it splits the loan between a bank and a Certified Development Company at a long fixed rate
- Equipment finance outside the SBA: hipot sets, leak detectors, timing analysers and micro-ohmmeters all have active secondary markets, so standalone asset finance is usually available at better speed, if not always better rates
- Purchase-order and receivable finance: the right tool for the 60 to 90 day payment terms that utility and EPC contracts carry. Lenders in this sector care more about who your debtors are than about your trading history
- Federal and state grid-modernisation programmes: relevant where your product substitutes for SF6 equipment, which is a documented EPA emissions-reporting burden for transmission and distribution operators
How to Structure the UK Ask
The Start Up Loans scheme caps at £25,000 at 6% fixed with mentoring, which buys one test bench. Serious UK files are usually built as a stack: founder capital, a Start Up Loan, an asset-backed facility secured on test equipment, invoice finance against distribution network operator and contractor receivables, and where a genuine SF6-replacement innovation exists, an Innovate UK grant application running in parallel. SEIS and EIS relief is available to UK investors in a qualifying early-stage company and is often the difference between a hesitant angel and a signed subscription agreement. Lenders and investors will both ask for the approval timeline, because a switchgear business with no route to a supplier list is a workshop with expensive instruments in it.
Approvals, Standards and the SF6 Deadline Clock
There is no licence to manufacture a vacuum interrupter. There is, instead, a stack of product conformance, third-party testing and customer approval that functions as a licence in practice. Get the sequence wrong and you will have inventory you cannot legally or commercially sell.
United States
- IEEE C37 series conformance. Ratings to C37.06 and test procedures to C37.09 are the North American reference for medium-voltage circuit breakers. Budget $60,000 to $600,000 per design family and six to eighteen months including laboratory scheduling
- NRTL listing of the finished switching device through an OSHA-recognised laboratory such as UL, typically $15,000 to $80,000 plus recurring factory inspections, three to nine months
- EPA Clean Air Act SF6 provisions. New SF6 handling equipment is limited to 1% annual leakage and existing equipment to 3%. This is a cost on your SF6-based competitors, not on you, and it belongs in your competitive section
- Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, Subpart DD. Electrical transmission and distribution operators report SF6 emissions annually. That reporting burden is the mechanism that converts environmental policy into purchase orders for vacuum product
- California Air Resources Board SF6 regulation for gas-insulated equipment, the earliest and strictest US state-level driver
- Buy American and Build America provisions where you intend to sell into federally funded grid work. Domestic content tests are specific and need planning into your supply chain from day one, not retrofitting later
United Kingdom
- UKCA marking for electrical equipment placed on the Great Britain market, which replaced CE marking for GB. Technical file preparation and conformity assessment support typically runs £3,000 to £20,000 over two to five months
- BS EN 62271 series conformance, the BSI adoption of the IEC standards, principally BS EN 62271-100 for high-voltage AC circuit breakers and BS EN 62271-200 for metal-enclosed medium-voltage switchgear. This is the primary technical benchmark for switchgear in the UK
- Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, plus the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 where you supply a powered operating mechanism
- Distribution network operator supplier approval. National Grid Electricity Distribution, UK Power Networks, SP Energy Networks and the rest each run their own technical schedules and witness testing. Budget £5,000 to £40,000 in sample units and witnessing, and nine to twenty-four months. This, not UKCA, is the real gate
- F-gas Regulations 2015 as retained in UK law, covering record keeping and leak checking on SF6 equipment, which again is your competitor's cost base rather than yours
European Union
Regulation (EU) 2024/573 on fluorinated greenhouse gases is the single most important regulatory fact in this sector. From 1 January 2026, new medium-voltage switchgear up to and including 24 kV may no longer use SF6 or other F-gases for insulation or arc quenching. From 1 January 2030, the prohibition extends to equipment above 24 kV and up to and including 52 kV. Vacuum switching combined with clean air or solid insulation is the principal compliant route at these voltages. Product sold in the EU still needs CE marking and EN 62271 conformance, and for high-voltage gas-insulated equipment operators the regulation has knock-on reporting and handling obligations documented by CIGRE and by national network operators. If you are writing a plan in 2026, this is your market-timing argument, and it is a legislated one rather than a forecast.
India
India deserves its own paragraph because the rules are more prescriptive than most founders expect and the market is large. BIS certification is mandatory for switchgear under the applicable Quality Control Orders. Type tests must be performed to IS 13118, the Indian standard for high-voltage alternating-current circuit breakers aligned with IEC 62271-100, and the certificates must come from CPRI, ERDA or another NABL-accredited or government-recognised test house. The detail that catches people out: state utility tenders routinely require that the type-test report be no more than five years old at the tender due date, with specific tests such as single capacitor bank breaking and short-time withstand called out individually. Retesting is therefore a recurring cost line in an Indian-facing plan, not a one-off capital item.
Which Laboratory, and When to Book It
The recognised independent short-circuit and type-test stations are KEMA in the Netherlands, CESI in Italy, VEIKI in Hungary and CPRI in Bengaluru. Testing at an international station is often more cost-effective than building any domestic capability and is the normal route to an IEC-recognised certificate. Treat the booking as a procurement milestone with a lead time, put it on the critical path in your operations plan, and name who has been contacted and when the slot is held.

Book a CallTerms Your Plan Must Use Correctly
Switchgear buyers and technical reviewers read for vocabulary before they read for numbers. One misused term and the reader assumes you have never been in a substation.
- Vacuum interrupter (or "bottle"). The sealed vessel containing a fixed and a moving contact, operating at a pressure low enough that no gas sustains the arc. The complete switching device that houses it is a vacuum circuit breaker, a vacuum contactor or a recloser. Do not use the two terms interchangeably in a plan a utility engineer will read
- CuCr contact. The copper-chromium alloy contact face, produced by powder sintering, vacuum infiltration, vacuum arc melting or vacuum casting. Chromium provides dielectric recovery and low chop current; copper carries the load. Alloy ratio and production route are genuine engineering differentiators and belong in your product section
- Arc shield (vapour shield). The metal cylinder inside the ceramic envelope that intercepts metal vapour from the arc and stops it depositing on the insulating wall, which would otherwise destroy dielectric withstand. Composite shields are an active area of patent activity
- Bellows. The flexible stainless steel element that lets the moving contact stem travel while keeping the vacuum sealed. Bellows fatigue life sets the mechanical operation count for the device
- Getter. Reactive material placed inside the envelope to absorb gas molecules released over time and maintain vacuum across a service life that can exceed 30 years
- Pinch-off (tip-off). The final manufacturing step, where the evacuation tube is crimped and sealed, permanently closing the vessel. Everything about the device's economics follows from the fact that this step cannot be reversed in the field
- Penning or magnetron discharge test. The factory method of verifying vacuum: a DC voltage across the open contacts produces a leakage current, and a magnetic field traps it so the added current is proportional to residual gas content
- Contact erosion and dielectric withstand. The two end-of-life criteria. Erosion is measured against total travel, with end of life conventionally at about 3 mm of a roughly 14 mm stroke; withstand is measured by AC high-voltage test. Your condition-assessment service is priced against these two numbers, so define them precisely
One more worth knowing even though it is a system rather than a component: a ring main unit is the compact distribution switchgear assembly, historically SF6-filled, that the EU 2026 deadline forces toward vacuum and clean-air designs. It is the single largest retrofit and replacement opportunity in European distribution networks.
Sample Business Plan Extract
Here is an extract from a vacuum switching business plan written by our team, so you can see the level of specificity we work at:
Arcvantis Interrupter Systems LLC
Arcvantis Interrupter Systems will operate a 4,200 sq ft medium-voltage switching test and retrofit facility in Cincinnati, Ohio, serving investor-owned utilities, municipal electric systems and heavy industrial sites within a 350-mile radius. The company classifies under NAICS 335313 and will not manufacture vacuum interrupters; it will purchase qualified bottles from three approved sources and add value through condition assessment, remanufacture, retrofit module assembly and certified recommissioning.
Year 1 revenue is projected at $1.84 million, split 58% service (condition assessment, field replacement, recommissioning) and 42% product (retrofit modules at an average selling price of $2,400 and a 28.4% gross margin). Year 3 revenue reaches $4.26 million as two framework agreements, modelled at $610,000 and $845,000 annually, move the mix toward product while holding blended gross margin at 31%. Breakeven occurs in month 14 at a monthly revenue run rate of $142,000.
The founders are contributing $240,000 of personal capital and seeking a $1.1 million SBA 7(a) facility covering a 60 kV hipot set, a Penning discharge vacuum tester, a helium mass-spectrometer leak detector, a timing and travel analyser, assembly jigs for two product families, opening bottle inventory and nine months of working capital against 75-day average utility payment terms. A separate $300,000 tranche is ring-fenced for an IEEE C37.09 witnessed test programme on the first retrofit design family, with a laboratory slot provisionally held for Q3...

How a Switchgear Field Engineer Raised £285,000 by Shrinking the Plan
A founder with twelve years as a medium-voltage field service engineer came to us wanting to manufacture vacuum interrupters in the West Midlands. The first version of his plan asked for £3.4 million and was declined twice, because the vacuum furnace line and the type-approval programme consumed the funding before a single unit shipped. We rebuilt the plan around a 3,100 sq ft remanufacture and test bay in Dudley: buy qualified bottles, own the condition-assessment relationship, sell retrofit and recommissioning. The capital ask fell to £285,000, structured as £60,000 founder capital, a £25,000 Start Up Loan and a £200,000 asset-backed facility secured against the hipot set, the vacuum tester and the leak detector. Forecast breakeven moved from month 41 to month 16, four staff were hired in year one, and the furnace line reappeared as a year-four option funded from retained earnings rather than as a precondition.
